State Secretary at the Ministry of Health Dr. Mirsad Djerlek says that at the moment there are no serious problems in Serbia when it comes to children infected with coronavirus, because they generally exhibit a milder clinical picture, and that our country will be very careful when deciding on possible vaccination of children.

Namely, some pharmaceutical companies have announced, as reported by CNN, that vaccination of children older than 12 could start as early as in the fall, while the most realistic scenario for those younger than 12 is that a vaccine will be available in early 2022, writes the daily Kurir.

"We will be very careful when making decisions. We will include the best experts from the field of immunology, pediatrics and others in the National Coordination Team for Immunization. It's true that the British strain surprised us and attacked the younger population more, but these are mostly (university) and high school students.

When it comes to immunization of the youngest, although we respect medicine done abroad, we must rely on our strengths and consult our experts," said Dr. Djerlek.

He stressed that all research done around the world is being closely followed and that there is still time until the final decision on vaccination of children is made.

"We follow the research done around the world and if a new strain would appear, which would really endanger the health of our children, either older or younger than 12, we could talk about that topic. Of course, provided that the vaccine is proven safe. However, we have a lot of time until the final decision and we will not make such a decision hastily," concluded Dr. Djerlek.
