"From November until May, snow here is waist-deep": A snow tunnel formed on Mt. Golija road
"We appeal on all drivers not to go to this area without winter equipment, the terrain is such that very soon this section could get snowed in again," said Vitomir Arsovic from the public enterprise for road maintenance JP Putevi Srbije
After more than ten days, heavy machinery managed to clear and break through the state road on Mt Golija, the Preko Brdo-Odvracenica section, which was completely snowed in after the last heavy snowfall in March.
Four drivers from the public enterprise Putevi Ivanjica started the fight against snowdrifts, as four heavy machines for clearing snow were deployed in the field.
"Effectively, we formed a snow tunnel, the snow is several meters deep on the sides, but the road is now passable. However, we appeal on all drivers not to go to this area without winter equipment, the terrain is such that very soon this section could get snowed in again," Vitomir Arsovic from JP Putevi Srbije told RINA.
The locals who live in the village of Preko Brdo can finally reach the center of the municipality of Ivanjica, but they say that they are used to such weather conditions, even when those are unseasonable.
"From Mitrovdan until Djurdjevdan (Serbian Orthodox feasts taking place in November and in May), snow is waist-deep. I think that it doesn't snow on Golija only in August. We are completely used to these harsh winter conditions. We always stockpile food for us and for the cattle. That is how our ancestors lived, and so do we," said one local man.
Given the amount of snow on Golija, spring will not arrive to this area for several more months.
Road maintenance workers are hoping for good weather, though, and that they won't have to struggle against snowfall in April.
