Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic told the Czech portal Parliamentni Listy that he does not believe that NATO would ever officially apologize for the bombing of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) in 1999, as Czech President Milos Zeman has done.

"They will continue to repeat that they did the best they could and only wanted to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe. I do not believe in any official institutional apology from NATO. But if you ask me if Milos Zeman is the last president to do that, I don't think he is. It's the first, but not the last (apology)," said Vucic.

He said that the Czech president's apology for the bombing was a healing balm for the wound of the Serbian nation.

"Do you know how much this means to a small nation in Europe? Our small nation was attacked by 19 foreign countries, who will always say that they did it because of a humanitarian catastrophe, because of the children, because of anything. Instead, they killed 72 children in Serbia by bombing it. 72 children!

Was this the price we were forced to pay? Did they want to punish us this way? This really was not a legitimate punishment. That is why the words of President Zeman are not only very important to me, but also raise the pride and dignity of our nation. He could not have made our citizens more happy," said Vucic.

Speaking about the issue of dialogue with Kosovo, Vucic said that Serbia is open for dialogue, because when there is dialogue there is a little more security for the Serb people in Kosovo.

"It's important for us to hold talks and we are interested in finding a compromise solution. I was in Brdo Castle in Slovenia just now, at the summit of the countries of Southeast Europe, where I met Vjosa Osmani, who expressed interest in everything except a compromise solution on Kosovo.

If their intention is to wait for someone to put pressure on Serbia to recognize Kosovo's independence and make accusations of genocide against Serbia, and I don't know what else, then I am not an optimist. All this shows that the other side is not interested in dialogue. Whether we can successfully reach a compromise solution, I don't know at the moment and I don't view it optimistically. I hope that one day we will succeed," said the president of Serbia.

He also said that he did not expect changes in the position toward Belgrade and Pristina after the arrival of the administration of US President Joe Biden.

"America has recognized Kosovo and does not want to give up in that direction. Understandably, the US will continue to put pressure on Serbia, or perhaps I should not talk about pressure but about demands to recognize Kosovo's independence. But that is a category in US foreign policy that doesn't change and I don't expect any changes in the position toward us," said Vucic.
