Belgrader Nemanja Stamenkovic was sentenced today to seven years in prison for a serious act against the safety of public traffic because he caused an accident on January 4 on Medijana Boulevard in Nis, when two pedestrians were killed. He is also prohibited from driving a motor vehicle for five years.

"I would like to turn back the clock, for none of this to have happened and for everyone to be alive and well," Stamenkovic said in his closing remarks, as he apologized and asked for forgiveness.

While driving his Audi A6 Quatro, with two minor girls in it, Stamenkovic was moving at the speed of at least 131 kilometers per hour when he swerved off the road and onto a pedestrian path and mowed down 12-year-old Andrej and 48-year-old Dejan Ilic, a father of three children.

The child died on the spot, while Dejan passed away later in the hospital.

The prosecution sought eight years in prison, while Nemanja's defense was that he got taken ill while behind the wheel.
