Serbian among victims of horrific accident in Hungary: Car with migrants crashed chased by police

A Serbian citizen died in a horrific accident on December 13 in Morahalom near Hungary's border with Serbia. Six more people perished in the crash, and Hungarian authorities are working on identifying the victims.

According to a statement from the Hungarian police, a Serbian citizen who was driving a car with migrants in it died on the spot, while six migrants also lost their lives.

Based on information obtained during the investigation, the two smugglers picked up illegal migrants near Asotthalom and headed toward Szeged.

Another Serbian, who was allegedly in the passenger seat, was injured, as were three border guards.

The police arrested a Serbian who survived and he is in custody. He is being prosecuted on suspicion of committing the crime of human trafficking.

The accident happened when a car with Serbian license plates that was smuggling migrants crashed into a house in Hungary.

The police said earlier that the accident took place at around 11:40 pm when the driver of a car with Serbian license plates refused to stop at the checkpoint in Morahalom near the Serbian-Hungarian border.

The driver, a citizen of Serbia, tried to escape by driving very fast, eventually hitting the house, when the vehicle overturned.

The media reported that seven people died and four were injured.

In Hungary, human trafficking is punishable by one to five years in prison in a standard case, and up to five to 15 years in a qualified case. The organizer or perpetrator of the crime can be sentenced from 10 to 20 years, according to the statement the Hungarian police published on its website.
