Epidemiologist and member of the Crisis HQ Dr. Predrag Kon told RTS that New Year's Eve parties set to be taking place in squares are being constantly advertised, but that so far no one in the Crisis HQ has approved or supported that. In the second half of January, a jump in the number of new cases inevitably awaits us.

Dr. Predrag Kon told the RTS morning program that no one has approved gatherings of more than 500 people, while organized New Year's Eve celebrations in squares are widely advertised.

"So far, no one in the Crisis HQ has approved or supported that. There will certainly be no epidemiologist, at least not in the Crisis HQ, who will support such events. The fact is that we will either work proactively or wait until the growth (in new cases) starts and then take measures, but it is cheaper and better to work proactively," the epidemiologist emphasized.

According to him, New Year's Eve parties are a trigger for transmitting the virus.

"That can't be avoided in the current situation," says Kon.

He said that the epidemiological situation in Serbia is improving day by day, but warns about the Omicron strain and the arrival of our people from abroad, where Omicron is beginning to dominate very seriously.

"We expect a larger influx of both that virus and the flu virus in the near future, in the coming days, and many (people) have already arrived. What can be expected is that the decline in numbers will stop," said this member of the Crisis HQ.

He stressed that a jump in the number of new daily cases inevitably await us in the second half of January.

"Considering the data in Britain, where the number of new cases doubles in two days, you have a fourfold increase within a week," warns Kon.
