Tiodorovic: It's serious, complications increasing in children. I fear we'll make the same mistake in February

Epidemiologist Branislav Tiodorovic says that the epidemiological situation is serious, especially regarding elderly chronic patients, among whom many are dying. However, as he said, we are having increased complications in children as well.

Epidemiologists believe that the peak of this wave of coronavirus is expected in mid-February. In Nis alone, there are more than 3,000 examinations during one day, among whom 800 people are found to be infected every day.

Crisis HQ member Branislav Tiodorovic has told RTS that attention should be paid to pregnant women and new mothers.

"At the moment, the situation is quite serious. Primarily regarding the elderly with severe chronic diseases. We have an increase in the number of deaths, which means very complicated clinical pictures. We also have an increase in the number of children who are positive, but also complications in them, pediatricians know that, and are completely right in their stance, which we have supported. Also, attention should be paid to pregnant women and new mothers, and especially young people, because we have two young people who have died - born in 1971 and in 1978, who had chronic serious diseases. All this says that we should endure this week and the next and be careful," said Professor Dr. Tiodorovic.

Tiodorovic advised that one should take the virus seriously, regardless of the fact that there are more confirmed than hospitalized cases.

"But the hospitals are filling up at a very serious pace. And, it can already be said that they are in trouble because there are more and more health workers who are sick or positive, and it is very difficult to ensure that the whole system works. On the other hand, we have that also in education with teachers, because even there you can see that there is a larger number of positive cases.

It is necessary to try to get serious, to get through the month of February as easily as possible, provided that we don't have a more serious flu outbreak. I must say that it will be a serious problem if the flu appears in a more serious form," Tiodorovic stressed, recalling that vaccination gives good results.

When it comes to the February holiday, Sretenje, when citizens are used to connecting a few days off, the epidemiologist is afraid that the same mistake will be repeated.

"I appeal on parents that if free days are connected, for the sake of the children, they don't use that to go skiing, to spas, and to practically create a new wave that would be stronger than what we have at the moment," said Professor Dr. Tiodorovic.

Commenting on the work of the Crisis HQ, he said:

"This is a war against the virus, there is praise, but also punishment, the most severe punishment is when a patient dies," Tiodorovic stressed.
