General Svetozar Marjanovic (77) passed away on Saturday, his son Sasa Marjanovic has confirmed. As he said, the general's heart simply stopped, Kurir is reporting.

Svetozar Marjanovic is remembered as one of the signatories of the Kumanovo Agreement, which marked the end of the NATO aggression against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro). The document, signed on June 9, 1999, included, provisioned for, among other things, the withdrawal of the army and the police from Kosovo, while a day later the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1244.

The signatories of the document regarding military-technical cooperation were British General Michael Jackson on behalf of the international NATO/ KFOR force, while on behalf of FR Yugoslavia it was signed by Police General Obrad Stevanovic and Colonel General of the Yugoslav Army (VJ) Svetozar Marjanovic.

The results of the negotiations, which lasted for a full five days, were announced by the Briton at 11:45 pm in front of a military tent. In addition to the British general, Marjanovic also appeared before the press in order to inform the Serbian public about the end of the war.

The most important provisions of the Kumanovo Agreement were the cessation of hostilities between NATO and the Yugoslav Army and the Serbian police, the withdrawal of the VJ and the Serbian police from Kosovo and Metohija within 11 days, the establishment of a safety zone along the administrative boundary between central Serbia and Kosovo and Metohija, and KFOR's disarming of the KLA ("Kosovo Liberation Army").
