On the right bank of the Drina River, underneath the slopes of Mt. Tara in western Serbia, is a symbol of the town of Bajina Basta - the famous "Drina River House" also known as the "Little House on the Rock."

The first house was built in 1968 by boys from Bajina Basta who wanted to get away from everything and everyone. But the swelling river swept away the wooden planks from which the house was made.

However, that did not stop Drina enthusiasts from building a new "roof over their heads" on a rock in the middle of the river.

The battle between the persistent locals of Bajina Basta and the moody Drina has been going on for more than five decades. During that time, the Drina destroyed six of these structures. The seventh survives thanks to the wisdom of the builder who designed the house without the front and back walls, so that when the river swells up, the water simply passes through the house, without demolishing it.

The attraction on the rock in the middle of the Drina near Bajina Basta could not go unnoticed by foreign tourists. The Drina River House has been featured in many foreign magazines, and Business Insider ranked it among the 16 strangest houses in the world.

And while the story of the structure captivates in its own way, even more interesting is legend that is still retold in this area, and according to which the foundation of the famous house is credited to none other than Marko Kraljevic, a medieval Serbian nobleman who is assigned supernatural powers in folk tales.

The legend says that this famous Serbian hero wanted to cross from one side of the Drina to the other, but he did not want his faithful Sarac to get his hooves wet. That is why Marko Kraljevic took a rock, threw it in the middle of the river and allowed Sarac to cross the Drina in two jumps.

The legend further says that the prints of the horse's hooves remained on the rock, but cannot be seen because they are covered by the famous house...
