Leader of the People's Party Vuk Jeremic stated that at this moment, it does not seem that Serbia is exposed to excessive pressure to impose sanctions against Russia.

He added that sanctions would not contribute to Serbia moving closer to the European Union, because, as he said, "with an autocratic regime such as the one in power in Belgrade, we cannot even dream of joining the EU."

Jeremic added that he "allows for the possibility that he may be wrong" but that the People's Party demands that government officials, who are talking to the EU and the US, publicly say in parliament what will happen if sanctions are not imposed - since it is clear that Serbia would suffer heavy economic and political consequences if it did impose sanctions on Russia, but the consequences of not imposing them are not clear.

"Introducing sanctions would not bring us closer to the EU, since we have been stalled on the European path for years because we do not have free media, functional rule of law and the fight against corruption. One cannot join the EU as a dictatorship worse than Orban's. They have had enough of one Orban, they do not need another one from the Balkans," said Jeremic.

The leader of the People's Party said that Serbia is the only country in Europe that did not impose sanctions against Russia, but that no other country in Europe was bombed (by NATO) after the end of the Cold War or suffered sanctions itself, and recalled that sanctions began to be applied exactly 30 years ago against Serbia, making people suffer, while the regime of the time accumulated wealth.
