M.M. (64) - who last night robbed a gas station in Mirijevski Boulevard in Belgrade, with the use of a firearm - an M70 pistol - and whom police officers from the Zvezdara station caught up with last night around 21:35 in Salvadora Aljendea Street in Palilula, and shot with three bullets after he ignored their warnings to drop the gun - was in the past imprisoned for serious crimes, Telegraf has learned.

"He was found guilty and convicted to 14 years in Pancevo in 1996, for the criminal offense of aggravated robbery or robbery with fatal outcome. Then, in 2006, he was sentenced to 9 months for assaulting an on-duty official person," a source from the investigation told us.

Before the confrontation last night, he told the police to "put down their weapons."

According to unofficial reports, the officers first shouted at him, "Put down your weapon!", to which he replied, "You put down yours! Now what do we do?!"

The suspect then pointed his gun at the police officers, after which they fired three shots and killed him.

The investigation was carried out by the deputy of the Higher Public Prosecutor in Belgrade and officers from the Criminal Investigations Directorate (UKP) for the City of Belgrade.

Further work on this case continues to establish all the circumstances.
