The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the outcome of the meeting between Belgrade and Pristina, held on February 27, was a step forward, but that work still needs to be done to reach an agreement on normalization of relations, based on the European proposal supported by the European Council in February.

In a statement delivered to Tanjug, it is stressed that Spain will not change its position regarding independence of Kosovo and Metohija.

"Spain stands by its position that it does not recognize Pristina's 2008 unilaterally declared independence. We defend the need to resolve the issue of the territory of Kosovo through dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina. It is time to make a definitive effort to resolve the Kosovo issue.

We support the great involvement of the EU high representative and vice-president (Josep Borrell) to help resolve the conflict and we fully support the work of the EU's special envoy (Miroslav) Lajcak," the statement said.

It added that although it is positive that both Belgrade and Pristina agreed on the text of the proposal without any changes, there will be no firm agreement without a clear plan on how to implement it.
