Reacting to this news, the president of said:

"It was with particular sadness that I received the news of the death of Djordje Mihajlovic, the custodian of the Zeitenlik cemetery, where Serbian heroes and victims of 'the Albanian Golgotha' rest, but also the custodian of the collective memory of one of the most glorious heroic periods of our history.

Modest and quiet, faithful to his homeland and people, he carried out his duties with zeal and with great respect for the shadows of those for whom Serbia was the most sacred. With the same dedication, he told the guests and visitors about the exploits of our warriors, thanks to whom Serbia is today proud of its freedom-loving spirit and ancestral heritage.

Respected and loved by the people, worthy of the duty he was entrusted with, Uncle Djordje left quietly, because that's how he lived, showing our whole nation that the stance towards one's ancestors determines the future of the descendants. My deepest condolences to the family and admirers of this venerable old man. May he rest in peace," Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Instagram.

For his many years of dedication, Djordje Mihailovic was awarded the Order of the Serbian Flag, second degree, and the Order of Saint Sava, first degree.

He was a Greek citizen, and three years ago received the passport of the Republic of Serbia.

Mihailovic was known to everyone who has visited the place where around 8,000 Serbian heroes of the Great War, who died during the battles on the Thessaloniki front, rest.
