Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that it is possible to destroy the Serb people - "but it is impossible to break them."

"Many times I heard, 'We have to put pressure on them, that's the weak link'. That's the philosophy. Why exactly should the Serbs be brought down? To be honest, I don't know.

Moreover, in open conversations with certain leaders while we still had normal relations, they'd tell me, 'We must increase pressure'. I asked why and there was no answer. Just like that, such a philosophy, a paradigm, has been established, it should be done like this - add more pressure," Putin said at the Valdai forum, speaking about the policy of the West towards Serbia.

"But the Serbs are not that kind of people, it's not that kind of history, it's a different culture. Perhaps what I will say is a harsh thing: It is possible to destroy them, but it is impossible to break and subjugate them. The West does not understand this. But I hope that sooner or later there will be an understanding of this component in both European and global politics in general - that there will be an understanding that it is still more constructive to negotiate instead of trying to put pressure on them," Putin noted.
