Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Goran Vesic has said that, after the government adopted a decision during its latest session on declaring flights in the public interest regarding the airport Konstantin Veliki (Constantine the Great) in Nis and the airport Morava in Kraljevo, the conditions are now here to start procedure to select the best bidder, which will perform regular air transportation to a total of 10 destinations from those two airports for a period of up to four years.

The minister stressed that it is important to preserve the continuity of traffic connections from these two airports, because this is of great importance for the economic and social development of southern and eastern Serbia, as well as (central) Sumadija, and Western Serbia districts.

This is about ten fights that have been declared to be in the public interest, the result of an initiative of the local governments in these cities - Nis, Kraljevo, Cacak. The are lines from Nis to Frankfurt, Cologne (Germany), Ljubljana (Slovenia) Athens (Greece), Tivat (Montenegro), Istanbul (Turkey), and Belgrade, as well from Kraljevo (Serbia) to Istanbul, Tivat, and Thessaloniki (Greece).

"With this decision coming into force, one of the main conditions has been met to start the procedure for the selection of the most favorable bidder who will perform regular air transport on the lines that are not commercially profitable, to a total of 10 destinations," explained Vesic and recalled that the state's large investments in air transport recently has been in the airport in Nis, where a new terminal building is under construction, which should be completed by the end of next month.

This will be followed by installing new equipment, so that passengers using Konstantin Veliki can travel more comfortably - as early as next summer season. He pointed out that the Nis airport is recording an increasing number of passengers, and that this year it will exceed the record from 2019, when the number was 422,000 people.

"The Nis airport is designed for around 1.5 million passengers, and we want and are doing everything to have as many. That is why we are investing in Nis, which is becoming an increasingly important traffic hub," said Vesic and added that currently 13 lines operate from Nis, of which three are seasonal and 10 regular.

The minister added that the state is investing in "Morava" near Kraljevo - the third international airport in Serbia.
