The system for early warning that a nuclear or radiological accident had taken place, which consists of 33 measuring stations, has arrived in Serbia and preparations are underway for its installation.

As we have already reported, these measuring stations are a donation from the European Commission, which was realized through a project to improve the system for early nuclear or radiological accident warning, in which the Serbian Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate has been participating since 2021.

Bearing in mind that neighboring countries have active nuclear power plants, as well as the construction of new nuclear reactors in Hungary, the installation of the new system will improve nuclear or radiological accident alerts.

These 33 measuring stations will be deployed in such a way as to improve the coverage of the entire territory of Serbia, in accordance with existing risks. The installation of new stations will improve the mechanism for a timely adoption of appropriate measures to protect the population and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation.

The existing system for early warning, under the jurisdiction of the Directorate, was established in 2007 and until now consisted of a network of nine measuring stations.

In accordance with the Law on Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security (Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia, No. 95/19 and 10/19), the Directorate, among other things, monitors the level of radioactivity, its changes, assesses impact on the population and the environment and gives instructions on application of appropriate measures.

Part of the system for monitoring the level of radioactivity is a network of measuring stations - detectors for automatic measurement of radioactivity in the environment, that is, a system for early warning of a nuclear or radiological accident.

After the new system has been installed, Serbia's territory will be covered by state-of-the art equipment of this type.
