Belgrade (Catholic) Archbishop Ladislav Nemet said today in his Christmas epistle that in a person there is good and evil, light and darkness, but that they are called to be the bearer of light, warmth and love.

(Serbia is a majority Orthodox Christian country, that will officially celebrate Christmas on January 7)

"Man has always looked for light in order to see, in order to get rid of insecurities, which, like a burden, suffocate and tighten the heart. Christmas time is from the first beginnings of this holiday related to light, more precisely to the source of all light, the Sun and God within us," Nemet said in his message.

He pointed out that one of the greatest prophets in the Bible - Isaiah, wrote, "The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. Those who live in a dark land, the light will shine on them."

"We remember May 3, 2023, when nine students and their guard were fatally shot at the Vladislav Rybnikar Elementary School. We were appalled, we couldn't believe that this was possible in our country. And yet, it happened because of different facts, a set of circumstances, human failings, irresponsible persons, but also - a criminal act," said the archbishop of Belgrade, regarding the May tragedy in this Belgrade school.

He stressed that the scenes we see of the war in the Middle East, but also in Ukraine, as well as the reports from the battlefields, show that the main targets of the attacks of all warring parties, in addition to military ones, are certainly sources of energy, electricity and water. The archbishop said that means of communication can "horribly influence human behavior."

"We know what role the media and means of social communication play in waging wars, misinformation and spreading hatred. Reality programs such as 'Zadruga' and 'Farma' spread the culture of darkness in human hearts," emphasized Nemet.

According to him, it seems that it is easier to increase the amount of darkness in a person than the strength of light, and it is very difficult to persuade people to give to the poor in these times.

Also, the archbishop pointed out that in the capital it is easy to run into several betting parlors on every street, where financial resources are lost and the lives of families and individuals are destroyed.

"Man is called to be a bearer of light, warmth and love. We have known this since we appeared on earth, but to what boundaeries this awareness of carrying light, warmth and love can go, we learned about from Jesus, who was born in Bethlehem," Nemet concluded.
