Last night at around 23:10 a fire broke out in the Vjesnik high rise building on Slavonska Avenue in Zagreb, Croatia.

It then spread vertically, engulfing several floors and the roof, with a large number of firefighters deployed in a bid to contain and extinguish it.

According to currently available information, there was no one in the building at the time the fire broke out.

93 firefighters with 30 vehicles are taking part in the operation to put out the blaze.

"The fire is still active and is spreading through structural openings. Because of the increased danger, firefighters have been withdrawn from the interior," announced the Zagreb firefighting authority.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Footage from the scene shows the building in flames.

"We received a report around 11 p.m. Interestingly, we only got one report from the citizens. Otherwise, we always receive multiple reports when there is a large fire. Three vehicles from the nearest station were sent to intervene. All firemen from the city of Zagreb were then deployed. It can be assumed that we will bring the fire under control during the day. But it will take time," said Sinisa Jembrih, commander of the Public Fire Station of the City of Zagreb, reports 24sata.hr.

The scenes are terrifying, and Mayor of Zagreb Tomislav Tomasevic was in front of the Vjesnik building this morning.

"(The fire) is constantly flaring up on various floors. It is being extinguished from the inside and the outside. It's unknown what caused it, there are some doubts, but the investigation will determine that. Unfortunately, the damage is total. The majority owner of the building is the state, structural engineers will need to see if it should be demolished or if it can be reconstructed," said Tomasevic.

At this point, there is no danger of the building collapsing, he added.

"That there have been no victims and the safety of the firefighters are the most important things," the Zagreb mayor stated.
