New municipal administration in Zvecan in northern Kosovo and Metohija walks into vandalized premises
The newly elected leadership of the municipality of Zvecan in northern Kosovo and Metohija today visited the offices in the municipal building and found broken furniture strewn around, scattered documents and graffiti on the walls.
The municipal building premises have been vandalized, binders with documents as well as garbage scattered around the offices and corridors.
The new, Serb mayor of the Zvecan municipality, Dragisa Milovic, said earlier that the premises were demolished, the basement is full of water, valuable works of art are missing while Orthodox Christian icons have been desecrated.
Milovic added that there are now teams that are working to repair the damage in order to ensure the safety of the building.
The new mayor said that it is known that these premises were occupied by special (Kosovo) police units for the past three years.
In Kosovo and Metohija, the assemblies of nine municipalities with a Serb majority were constituted last Friday, and the newly elected mayors from the Serb List List took office.
This includes the four municipalities in the north where Albanian mayors were elected in April 2023 when only 3.5 percent of registered voters turned out, in elections held after representatives of the Serbs left the provisional institutions due to Pristina's unilateral and escalating moves and non-compliance with agreements.
While Albanian mayors were at the head of the local self-governments in the north of Kosovo and Metohija, Serbian institutions were driven out from their premises, street names were changed, signs with names of settlements printed in Cyrillic were removed and replaced with names in Albanian first, and then under them in Serbian transliterated to Latin - often with typos.
