MOL is set to buy a 56 percent ownership stake in NIS (Petroleum Industry of Serbia, a company under US sanctions) at a price estimated between 900 million and 1 billion euros.

Previously, there was willingness to offer more for NIS, but the details of the potential sale to the state of Serbia have not been disclosed in order not to jeopardize state interests.

Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia and Minister of Finance Sinisa Mali said two days ago that it is expected that the final acquisition contract between Gazprom Neft and MOL regarding NIS will be signed by March 20.

Reports today pointed out that Serbia will not enjoy a secure energy future by 2035 unless continuous investments in the energy infrastructure continue.

NIS reacts to OFAC decision

On January 23, the US Department of the Treasury (its OFAC office) issued a special license to NIS, allowing the company to carry out operational activities without hindrance until February 20, 2026, the company has announced.

The new license allows the continuation of business operations, contracts, and other agreements involving NIS or its operating subsidiaries, including refinery processing, crude oil imports, the execution of transactions necessary for supply security and technical maintenance, as well as financial settlements.

A NIS statement concluded that the company will inform the public in a timely manner of any new circumstances that may affect its operations.
