President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic has reacted to the news that the distinguished Serbian diplomat Vladislav Jovanovic has passed away at the age of 93.

"It was with sadness that I received the news of the death of Vladislav Jovanovic, one of the last great diplomats of his generation, who with his experience, as well as his thoughtful and measured work, greatly shaped the foreign policy of our country in difficult times during which he conscientiously and in a dedicated manner performed his responsible duties," wrote Vucic in a post on X.

He recalled the important role that Jovanovic played on the diplomatic scene.

"A witness to great historical upheavals both in our country and in the world, Vladislav Jovanovic invested his enormous knowledge in an attempt to position the state policies and principles in a world that was not ready to hear and respect them. Nevertheless, he remained consistent to the end to the principles of the old school diplomacy and remained loyal to Serbia and her people until his last day. I offer my deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and those who admired his selfless patriotic advocacy for the sake of Serbia's well-being. May he rest in peace," Vucic stated.

Jovanovic was the head of diplomacy for two terms, served as ambassador to the UN, and also in Brussels, London, Ankara in various diplomatic roles.

He spent four years as embassy officer in Brussels (1960-1964), then as second secretary at the embassy in Ankara (1967-1971), and as adviser at the embassy in London (1975-1979).

Jovanovic was the Yugoslav ambassador to Turkey from 1985 to 1989.

Jovanovic led several Yugoslav delegations at peace talks and other negotiations during the 1990s.
