Head of Serbian Orthodox Church Patriarch Porfirije writes to Putin, Trump, and Pope

The leader of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC), Patriarch Porfirije, sent a letter today to Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump, head of the Catholic Church Pope Leo XIV, as well as top European and world officials, urging them to use their authority in order to stop Pristina from implementing its extremely discriminatory law on foreigners.

Patriarch Porfirije warned that the implementation of this law would not only call into question the work of the University in Kosovska Mitrovica and of primary and secondary schools that Serb students attend according to the curriculum of their state, as well as the work of the entire healthcare system thanks to which Serbs from Kosovo and Metohija receive medical care, but also the very survival of the Serb people and the Orthodox Christian holy places.

"With the application of this law, Serbs would lose the opportunity to receive education and medical treatment, while employees in education and healthcare would lose their jobs, which would lead to an even more massive, if not final, departure of Orthodox Serbs from this centuries-old Christian land, where there remain to this day around 1,300 Orthodox churches, monasteries and other, destroyed, Christian shrines," the patriarch stressed.

He reminded world leaders that no other place in Europe, despite the said destructions, has such a concentration of Christian holy sites - four of which are on the UNESCO list of endangered world heritage.

Patriarch Porfirije pointed out that the Serbian Orthodox Church persists in seeking a peaceful solution and expects the Serbian authorities to do everything possible to find a compromise solution.

"Human lives are the most sacred thing and we have a duty to protect them," wrote the Serbian patriarch.
