Drecun: Albin Kurti will hardly repeat or achieve better result in these elections
Chair of the Serbian National Assembly Committee on Security Milovan Drecun assessed on Sunday that it is unlikely that the prime minister of the provisional Pristina institutions, Albin Kurti, will achieve the same or better results in the upcoming early parliamentary elections, compared to the previous ones.
Drecun told Tanjug that early elections will happen in the province because of the unwillingness of Kurti's Self-Determination party and the opposition in Pristina to achieve a compromise.
"Kurti could have made a compromise, accepted Vjosa Osmani or someone else and got the president of so-called Kosovo elected, but on the other hand, the opposition did not want to allow him unlimited political power, control over the assembly and the so-called government, and the post of president - rather, they wanted to balance things out," Drecun said.
He believes that the correct observation is that Kurti did not want Vjosa Osmani to be the president of the provisional Pristina institutions because she would have marginalized him in Washington.
"And it is a correct observation that the fact that Osmani imposed herself in the United States and to the Trump administration as a reliable collaborator probably caused Kurti's resistance, that he felt she somehow marginalizes him at the international level when it comes to the US," said Drecun.
However, he added that Kurti's behavior is completely understandable, because he was the undisputed winner in the last elections and wanted to seize complete power.
"You have to make compromises in order to get that two-thirds (assembly) majority. That (condition) is a way to legally limit someone's absolute power, to deny it to someone. But Kurti was not ready to compromise and obviously he assessed it's better for him to go to the polls than to accept to share power," Drecun said.
He added that Kurti received a large number of votes from Albanians living abroadwho were visiting during the previous elections, held during the holidays, and that the question now arises how many of them will vote by mail in June, or will be in Kosovo and Metohija.
"It seems that Kurti is really now reaping the rewards of the work done among that diaspora. He was very active. And that part of the Albanian electorate pays much less attention to the daily problems people in Kosovo and Metohija face - joblessness, low standard of living, corruption, crime. Kurti's Greater Albania anti-Serb rhetoric is much more important to them (abroad)," said Drecun.
According to him, Kurti directs this "attention" to Serbs towards hatred and terror, because of the diaspora which is very sensitive to these topics.
Commenting on recent sentences of life and 30 years in prison pronounced against three Serbs, put on trial in the Banjska case, Drecun stressed that the assessment of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija, that this is an act of retaliation and revenge against those Serbs who dared to oppose the terror against them and their families, is correct.
"These are incredible sentences. Look at how many terrorist organizations there are around the world, how many Islamic State members have come under the guise of migrants and what they are doing... So where are the draconian punishments in those cases - while here, it's important to intimidate the Serbs to the greatest possible extent. Any resistance to the terror carried out against you - know that you will receive draconian punishment," Drecun said.
