Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Adrijana Mesarovic said today that Serbia has an obligation to protect the truth about the suffering of its people without hesitation.

"The most dangerous form of revisionism is not changing textbooks - but an attempt to erase the memory about the Serb victims. Every time the crimes committed against Serbs in the NDH (Independent State of Croatia) are minimized or called into question, when Jasenovac is relativized or the documented suffering is disputed, it is not only history that is being attacked - the dignity of the victims and the right of a people to the truth is under attack," Mesarovic wrote in a post on Instagram.

She asked if we are supposed to be silent and not commemorate the victims of the criminal (Croatian) Operation Storm in order to please someone and whether the servile policy of the former regime before 2012 in Serbia resulted in respect for the Serb victims.

"The restoration and strengthening of the national identity, which Aleksandar Vucic insists on, is a way to protect ourselves from the tragedies we experienced in the past so that they never happen again. A policy that builds identity on the relativization of its own crimes cannot be a policy of sincere reconciliation. Reconciliation is not possible without the truth, and the truth is not a matter of political agreements, but of historical facts, documents and testimonies," Mesarovic stressed.

According to the minister, Serbia has an obligation to protect the truth about the suffering of its people, not because of the past, but for the sake of the future.

"A nation that allows others to write its history runs the risk that others will determine its future as well," said Mesarovic.
