SYMBOL CAUGHT PEOPLE'S ATTENTION: Swastika on Mediana 16 centuries before Nazis (PHOTO)

"Swastika" or "hooked cross" many people associate with the infamous Nazi ideology, while the millennia earlier this sign symbolized the sun or solar deity and as such is the mosaic of Nis Mediana archaeological site, explains historian Nebojsa Ozimic.

The swastika is an universal symbol that dates back almost to prehistoric times, in ancient times when, experts say, it indicated the solar cult or the movement of the sun, reports juznevesti.com.

This symbol is retained even after antiquity, and it is presented often on the mosaics and building from the Middle Ages. The symbol is prevalent throughout the world and can be found on the remains of ancient civilizations in the Andes of South America or in China.

In most cases the legs are facing the opposite of the symbol that was used in Nazism. It is a solar cult, replaces the representation of the sun, it's something you'll find in every civilization of South America, Africa, Asia, Oceania - says Ozimic.

Many are attracted precisely on the swastika mosaics in most of the rooms of the former Villa with peristyle, and the porch of the courtyard.

Mediana, according to historical data,  as a suburb of the ancient Naissus, developed in the period from the 2nd to the 6th century, while Christianity in this region occurred around the 4th century.

Previously, there were soldiers from different regions, mainly in the east where they had brought symbols from that are typical for these areas. The swastika is one of them - explains Ozimic.

In the 20th century the swastika was usurped by the German Reich, and Joseph Goebbels, the German propaganda minister, linked it to the fascist doctrine. Swastika was also found on the flag of fascist Germany and became associated with the idea of a racially "pure" state. No matter that the symbol is much older than the Nazi Party, it is usually related to this ideology, even to the extent that in some countries it is banned by law.

People have a need to interpret what they see in a language that is familiar to them without serious consideration of the past. It is a matter of general culture, but I believe that most young people know that the swastika in ancient times symbolized something else - explains historian Nebojsa Ozimic.

Mediana locality is open to visitors from Tuesday to Thursday from 10 am to 19 pm, while on Saturday and Sunday it is open till 15 PM. Single ticket for adults is 150 dinars, while for students 130 dinars.
