"KFOR plans to reduce presence in Kosovo and Metohija as number of KSF members increases"

If someone really wants international forces to fully fulfill their mandate in Kosovo and Metohija, how can they work on the transformation of the Kosovo Security Force (KSF) into the Kosovo army. Kosovo is not a state, it is not a member of the UN, and KFOR is there according to (UN) Resolution 1244, which does not envisage such a formation - stressed the chairman of the Assembly Committee on Kosovo and Metohija

Commenting on Swiss army chief Thomas Sussli's statement that the end of peacekeeping missions in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiHI) and Kosovo and Metohija cannot be predicted, because the withdrawal of peacekeepers would bring back instability, President of the Serbian Assembly Committee on Kosovo and Metohija Milovan Drecun said that further international presence encourages those who want to make BiH a unitary country, who are trying to make the Serb Republic (RS) disappear or be so disenfranchised that it exists as a kind of non-governmental organization.

Speaking for RTS this morning, Milovan Drecun said that there are currently 3,400 KFOR members in Kosovo.

"They plan to reduce their presence to the minimum required level, which is 2,500 people, in parallel with the increase in the number of KSF members, i.e., the imagined army of Kosovo," Drecun stressed.

According to him, a realistic assessment of the situation on the ground is expected from officers and chiefs of any army.

"I cannot completely agree with the assessment of Thomas Sussli. It's true in the case of Kosovo and Metohija that international forces should remain there, but as far as BiH is concerned, further international presence encourages those who want to make BiH a unitary country, who are trying to make the Serb Republic (RS) disappear or be disenfranchised to such a degree that it exists as a kind of non-governmental organization," said the head of the Assembly Committee on Kosovo and Metohija.

"As for Kosovo and Metohija and the institutions that function there, because of constant pressure on the Serb people, because of the violence directed against the Serb people, the high crime rate, international presence is needed. KFOR is currently the biggest guarantee of some kind of security to the Serb people, for the minimum of stability that is needed in Kosovo and Metohija. Another question needs to be asked, too. If someone really wants international forces to fully fulfill their mandate in Kosovo and Metohija, how can they work on the transformation of the Kosovo Security Force into the Kosovo army. Kosovo is not a state, it is not a member of the UN, and KFOR is there according to Resolution 1244, which does not envisage such a formation," Drecun stressed.
