Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague extend detention for Hashim Thaci
Kosovo Specialist Chambers located in The Hague decided to extend the detention for another two months for one of the leaders of the KLA ("Kosovo Liberation Army"), Hashim Thaci.
Together with Jakup Krasniqi, Rexhep Selimi and Kadri Veseli, Thaci is accused of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity. The decision about the extension of the detention was reported by the Dukagjini website.
The decision was made on December 10 by presiding Judge Charles Smith.
The Chambers' panel determined that if released, there is risk that Thaci would obstruct the proceedings or commit other criminal acts, the site said.
The panel previously set January 19 as the deadline for the prosecution and defense to submit their final motions, and for the victims' representatives to submit statements regarding the consequences the alleged crimes have had on the 155 victims covered by this case.
The closing arguments are scheduled for February 9-13, marking the end of the public part of the trial.
After that, the panel will close the proceedings and begin to deliberate the verdict, which must be pronounced within 90 days, and if the circumstances require, the deadline can be extended by an additional 60 days.
