President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic said on Wednesday that there is a possibility of him running for prime minister, in the event that research and public opinion polls show that Serbia would go in the wrong direction if he did not do that.

Appearing on TV Informer, Vucic added that he does not think he will become the prime minister, that is, that he "hopes he will not."

Vucic also stated that he will head the (SNS) electoral list, but whether he will be the first on that list will depend on whether he wants to run for prime minister, and whether the people want it or not.

"If I see in the surveys that it's not necessary for me to run, then I will gladly endorse someone else. People said I was lying when I said that I would step down as the party leader, then it turned out that I was not lying, on the contrary, I was telling the truth and I am proud of how the (current) leader of the party of which I am a member behaves. Milos (Vucevic) is doing a good job, the party has remained firm, unshakable," said Vucic.

He added that he can always advise others from the sidelines.

"For several reasons, I hope that I will not (be the prime minister). But we will not lie to the people. We will tell the people who will head our list. I think it will be a list gathering a large number of figures, top intellectuals, people respected in the country. A list of one or more movements. Whoever wants to be on that list is welcome. Whoever doesn't want to, just don't whine later that you didn't cross the threshold," said Vucic.

Speaking about the contacts he has with world leaders, he pointed out that this is Serbia's "resource".

"My friendship with Sheikh Mohamed (UAE president) is a great resource for this country, I just don't know how some people involved in politics don't understand that. Not to mention Xi Jinping. Also Vladimir Putin, Ursula von der Leyen, if you will," Vucic said.

When asked if Putin had wished him a merry Christmas (celebrated in Serbia and Russia on January 7), Vucic replied that he did.
