PEOPLE'S BELIEFS ON ST. JOHN'S DAY: It is strictly prescribed what should be done today, and what not!

The Serbian Orthodox Church and its believers are celebrating the holiday dedicated to the birth of St. John the Forerunner and Baptist - St. John's Day.

St. John the Baptist was born six months before Christ - on July 7th - so called Forerunner, because people prepare for the coming of the Savior.

Six months before his report to the Virgin of Nazareth Virgin Mary, the high priest Zechariah in the temple of Jerusalem spoke to the Archangel Gabriel.

Before he released the miraculous conception of the Virgin Mary, the angel announced the conception of the childless Elizabeth, wife of Zacharias, who did not  immediately believe the words of the angel Gabriel. He therefore remained silent until the eighth day after the birth of the child. Then at circumcision and naming, Zacharias wrote on a panel: "His name is John."

Then his speech returned.

Like many Christians who died in the way of the Lord, St. John was killed during the reign of Herod.

The right hand of John the Baptist, which baptized the Lord, is kept as a relic of the largest (with part of the Holy Cross and the relics of St. Peter of Cetinje) in the Monastery of Cetinje.

St. John the Forerunner and Baptist is one of the most common Saint Day's in our nation. Today's major holiday is celebrated as the day godfathers and brothers.  In our tradition, godfathers are exceptionally appreciated and respected, as is often said: "God is in heaven, the godfather on earth!"

In the church calendar, today's holiday is marked by a red letter, which means it is one of the commandment holidays.

In our nation there are many beliefs that are associated with St John's Day. Most have a magical goal in themselves. St. John and St. George, are mainly holidays that celebrate sorcerers and do not miss the chance to then, the nights of magic make their rites and spells.

Country sorcerers on this day pick various herbs. Harvested leaves of grass must be exactly 77 plus another, but only half of some other plant. It is used by sorcerers to treat an unknown disease, one that has no name. It is believed that the night before St. John's has an unusually strong power, particularly healing, which, with the first rays of the rising sun disappears.

But. not all power immediately disappears, it remains during the day, mainly til noon. For us, in the love of magic thinking it is best that spells be cast on the eve of Young Fridday.

Vlachs and Serbs in the Timok region, as soon as the sun comes down on St John, go to the meadow and slam their head into the dewy grass to ensure good health throughout the year.

- The first and the last bite of breakfast should be huffed on and preserved until the evening, and then together with a mirror and a little sliver put under your pillow in order for the face of the chosen one to appear - yet another of the beliefs on St. John's.
