Prostran: Agricultural production drops eight percent

Agro-economic analyst Milan Prostran said Friday that drought had been taking a serious toll on Serbia's agricultural production, which he believes would go down more than eight percent this year

The yields of corn, which is our most important export agricultural product, will certainly be two to three million tons lower than the estimated eight million tons, but we have enough of it for domestic needs, Prostran told Tanjug.

Corn and soy will be hit the most, he said, stressing that “it will be a shock, as these two cultures account for nearly 30 percent of our agriculture GDP."

Serbian exports to Russia fall by 30 percent!

He observed that sunflower, and sugar beet, which draws water from deeper soil layers, are handling the weather a little better.

“Vegetables are doing fine, as they are grown in irrigation systems. Drought is causing problems to fruit crops, but not as much as in crop production,” Prostran said.
