When several years ago retired history professor Slavoljub Grozdanov placed the story in the media about mysterious dungeons in Zrenjanin, remnants of the former Beckerek fortress, with a desire to initiate their research, professional public was divided.

Some of them thought that the underground passages should be investigated in detail which, it is assumed, spread over a vast area, from which, and eventually, make it into a tourist attraction, while others were of the opinion that this is an expensive and risky endeavor, and that they should not should indulge in it, according to Zrenjaninski.com portal.

Besides the problem of lack of qualified and equipped people to explore, there is a risk of suffocation due to possible presence of toxic gases in the hallways.

Some historians even, without denying that in the framework there are underground corridors, consider that they are not so long, nor spacious, to be used in touristic purposes.

Beckerek fortress, otherwise, was built around 1527. With the decision of Karlovac peace, 1699, Temisvarska province (including Beckerek) remained under Turkish rule, with the Austrian army, which occupied this part of Banat, went to demolish the castle. This happened in 1701.

- Each fort had its underground channels so that people could withdraw before the enemy, and Beckerek fortress was no exception - Grozdanov emphasized, who considers that tourism workers of Zrenjanin are responsible for its concealment form the public.

Soon came the answer from the tourist center of the city of Zrenjanin, where they are reminded that Grozdanov was formerly chairman of the board of a public company, but he never formally put forward the idea of dungeons as baits for domestic and foreign tourists.

Either way, Grozdanov in the meantime ceased to push this initiative and to this day no one else has raised the issue.

The curious ones are, however, lured by the the entrance in one of the underground tunnels, which is in the middle of the city, actually, in the city garden, the most beautiful park in Zrenjanin.

This tunnel is only about a meter and a half tall, and historians explain the fact that people in the Middle Ages were much lower growth. Those who, regardless of the fact, wanted to peek inside but they are not allowed. A question is whether it will ever be.
