Albanian puts bomb at front door to prevent children from leaving house: Details from Prizren drama

When the police attempted to storm the house and arrest Iran Badali in Zur, near the town of Prizren - after receiving a phone call from a girl - they were in for a surprise. Iran, who had a long criminal record, allegedly placed explosives at the front door, resulting in the death of police officer Sami Thaci, while one of his colleague was badly injured. Iran's son was also injuried.

Iran came home on January 28 at about 7 pm. His 11-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter were there. According to Iran's neighbors, he repeatedly abused his two minor children. The suspect's seven-year-old daughter was the one who informed the Kosovo police about the violence inflicted on her by her parent.

Minutes after 8 pm, after receiving the girl's call, Kosovo police officers arrived at the scene in two vehicles.

Iran's two children, who didn't leave the living room, were in a run-down two-story house on Sacir Zuri Street in the village of Zur, near Prizren.

The reason why the children couldn't leave the house was terrifying. Iran Badali allegedly installed an explosive device at the front door, that would explode if the door opened.

Members of a specialized Kosovo police unit arrived at Badali's house. Among them were Sami Thaci and Artur Mrasori, along with three other colleagues. However, at the scene, in an attempt to arrest the suspect, Iran Badali, the police fell into a trap - believed to have been the explosives placed at the front door of the home. The blast severely injured Sami and his colleague Artur.

Thaci succumbed to his injuries and died while being transported to the hospital in Prizren by local residents.

A criminal past

Iran Badali's family from the village of Zur near Prizren is known to have had a criminal past. Iran's father was sentenced to several years in prison in the 1990s for the murder of his wife and father. He served his time in Dubrava, where he was killed in a mortar attack during the last war in Kosovo.

In these circumstances, Iran Badali grew up on his own.

"Iran grew up an orphan. HiIs dad was imprisoned for killing his mother and grandfather (his mother's father), he was sent to Dubrava. But he died during the war-time shelling of Dubrava," Iran's neighbors say.

About 12 years ago Iran married a girl who lived near the village of Zur. He had three children with her, two boys and a girl.

Iran always brought trouble to its home, habitually drinking and abusing drugs.

Considering the situation, in 2019 - after suffering physical and psychological abuse - the wife decides to leave, taking with her only one child, a boy just over a year old.

The other two children, the 7-year-old girl and the 11-year-old boy, stayed in Zur with their father Iran, until the evening of January 28.
