Serbia's darkest hour so far in coronavirus epidemic; 8 more dead, nearly half test positive

More and more people in this country know someone who is either infected or has died; today is the darkest day

A total of 39 victims have been claimed by coronavirus in Serbia so far, and one could say that today, on April 3, 2020, the situation is the most difficult it has been so far. According to the latest figures, as many as eight people have lost their battle to live over the past 24 hours - but there's a number that is even more frightening. Nearly half of those infected are from Belgrade.

Of the 748 people tested in the last 24 hours because they met a case definition of the disease, as many as 305 were positive for coronavirus, the highest number we have had to date.

This practically means that almost half of the people who presented with symptoms reminiscent of COVID-19 have actually been infected with the virus.

This is the first time we have have had over 40 percent of the ratio between those tested and the total number infected.

At the moment, the mortality rate is 2.64 percent, relative to the total number of those infected.

"There are people who do not respect the measures and then they applaud the doctors at 8 pm. Don't do this, don't be a hypocrite. If you do not respect the measures (to curb the spread of the virus), at least be honest enough not to applaud in honor of these doctors at 8 pm every evening, who will then because of you and your indiscipline have shifts of 18 instead of 12 hours or get infected and will not be able to cure neither you, nor anyone else," Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said in a live address.

Dr Goran Stevanovic said earlier that for the time being, things stand the way the attempts had been to keep them from the beginning, and that there has been no exponential growth.

"The fact is that if we cut off all contact at this point, in two to three weeks we could expect a fall in the number of patients, and the number of deaths would be reflected two to three weeks after that. But it all depends on each of us individually," said Dr. Stevanovic.

Dr. Darija Kisic Tepavcevic said earlier that we could have avoided these deaths as well, but that it is very important to follow the prescribed measures so that there would be no more cases of infection.
