All Belgrade green markets - except those of closed type, Palilulska and Stari Mercator - once again opened today at 7 am.

Buyers will have to keep a distance of two meters between themselves and only a certain number of people will be able to be at the market at the same time. Vendors must wear protective masks and gloves, and all stalls have foil on them in order to protect communication between buyers and vendors.

Hygiene and nutrition specialist Professor Dr. Jagoda Jorga spoke about how we should handle the foods we buy in green markets - that is, fruits and vegetables, but also bread, as the coronavirus epidemic continues.

"All vegetables that you can thermally process - do. The things we eat fresh, such as salads, should be washed under a strong flow of water for a long time. On the other hand, heat-treated foods must not be left out of the refrigerator.

She also warned that the cereals we like to eat for breakfast are incomparably hygienically riskier than a well-baked loaf of bread. Why?

"Because bread is baked at 200 degrees (centigrade), it has a crust that has no water, that is, nothing is left alive on that dehydrated crust. Bread is a completely safe food and there is very little epidemic risk. It has not been reported anywhere that anyone in the world has caught coronavirus by eating bread. We know otherwise that this is not a route of transmission for other intestinal infections either, so if this is primarily a respiratory infection with some intestinal effects, I do not claim that it cannot be transmitted by unwashed hands. But for now, bread is not considered as a transfer vector,"  Jorga concluded as she spoke for Prva TV.
