In the last few days, more than 15 people who lost the battle with the dangerous virus have been buried in Sjenica. These are people whose average age is about 70. Zlatko Gonjanin also died as a result of Covid 19, and he is the youngest Pester Plateau resident killed by the virus, at the age of 40.

"It's terrible what happened to us in just a few days. Zlatko was a taxi driver and he probably got the virus while doing his job," said Munevera Vrcic, the victim's cousin.

Zlatko was killed by the virus in just three days.

"He died on the way from Sjenica to the Uzice hospital. He is survived by his old mother and he also a sister who lives in America. This affected us all because he was a young and a good man," says Munevera.

Over 270 patients examined daily

There are about 30 patients waiting in front of the Healthcare Center in Sjenica at any given time. About 270 people were examined on Sunday alone, and out of that number, some 70 to 80 percent were infected with Covid-19. 60 patients were transported to Novi Pazar and Uzice on Sunday. Soldiers have set up a tent in front of this health institution, which will serve for triage.

"The situation is very difficult, it can be said that it's close to a disaster. We have a lot of patients, a huge number of people who come to be examined. The services in our Healthcare Center are under incredible pressure. From 40 examinations last week, we arrived to over 200 a day. We do not have good information about the number of dead because we send a lot of people to be tested again, but 20 people have certainly died from the Covid infection," said the head of the Emergency Service, Fuad Catovic.

The director of the Healthcare Center in Sjenica also has symptoms of Covid-19.

Head nurse Milica Kikovic says that everything happened suddenly, like a bomb going off, and that the number of daily examinationshas  increased sharply. "We turned the hospital into a Covid hospital, we received help from the Military Medical Academy, an internist from the Uzice Medical Center and one from Prijepolje came to help. We received 10 nurses and four doctors through the healthcare center, and there are a lot of sick health workers, doctors and nurses," said Kikovic.
