A fire broke out in the building of the Pensioners' House in Bihac this morning, while the Una-Sana Canton police said that it was started by migrants staying in this facility.

The local police spokesman, Ala Siljdedic. said that the fire was set in order to prevent members of the police from evicting the migrants who were in the building, the Nezavisne portal reported.

"This is a part of our regular activities within which we try to move migrants from urban parts of the town to the Lipa Center, where there is currently enough capacity to accept them. When the police arrived, the migrants used old mattresses, trash and other items to start a fire in order to prevent a police intervention," he said.

Firefighters soon showed up at the scene and put out the fire, after which the police found 60 migrants in the building, who were then transferred to the Lipa camp.

Siljdedic said that in the last two months, due to an increased influx of illegal foreign citizens, the situation in the area of the Una-Sana Canton has become more complicated.

"According to assesments, we have between 6,000 and 7,000 migrants, of which about 3,000 are accommodated in reception centers, while the rest are without adequate accommodation. The higher their number, the more problems we have, such as this one, and (other) criminal acts whose perpetrators are migrants," said Siljdedic.

As he explained, most migrants stay in abandoned or delapidated buildings.
