Babysitter arrested in Belgrade for giving 4-month old sedatives, doctor reports her

On the order of the First Basic Prosecutor's Office, babysitter S.C. has been arrested on suspicion that she gave a larger amount of the sedative Bensedin to a baby she was taking care of in the absence of its parents.

After toxicological tests were done, it was determined that the life of the baby that is four and a half months old is not in danger. S.C. is suspected of the criminal offense of neglect and abuse of a minor, the prosecution announced, Tanjug reports.

The woman was hired via a website by the parents to look after the child a few days before the event took place. It was determined last night that the baby was under sedatives, after which the police officers informed the prosecutor's office about the event.

The case was reported to the police by a doctor from the Children's Clinic in Tirsova Street, since the baby was admitted to the neurology ward there when a higher concentration of sedatives was found in its blood.

"Members of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Belgrade arrested S.C. (51) on suspicion that she committed the criminal offense of neglect and abuse of a minor. It is suspected that S.C., employed as a nanny, gave the baby sedatives while the parents were absent. The suspect was detained for up to 48 hours, and will be brought before the First Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade, along with a criminal complaint," the Ministry of the Interior announced.

After toxicological tests were done, it was established that the child's blood contained a larger amount of the drug Bensedin and that it was not in danger of dying.

"After the hearing, depending on her defense and data on previous convictions, the prosecution will decide whether to propose detention to the court, after which it will conduct all necessary evidence-related actions, examine witnesses, order necessary expert analyses and make a final decision," the prosecution said.
