"I saw the crib with my daughter in it on fire": Father says he tried to rescue his child with his bare hands

The father was admitted to the Institute for Burns, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He was diagnosed with second-degree burns to his hands. Six firefighters were sent to put out the fire

"I saw the flames that engulfed the crib. My daughter was in it. I took it it outside into the yard. I wrapped the child in a blanket and took her to the hospital," the father of a three-year-old girl told the police and doctors at the Institute for Mother and Chil, where the girl died due to the burns that covered 100 percent of her body, Telegraf.rs has learned.

The tragedy the  kind even the oldest inhabitants of the village of Grabovac near Obrenovac cannot recall happening took place yesterday at around 4 pm in the family home of the grandfather of the little girl who perished.

The girl was in her crib in a room where the fire broke out. According to initial information, it all happened when a blanket placed near a stove caught on fire.

"My wife went out to an auxiliary building to bring lunch to our daughter. I was in the hallway when I noticed the smoke. I opened the door and saw the flames that engulfed the crib my daughter was in...," the father of the victim told inspectors.

The child was in poor condition when she was admitted to the Institute for Mother and Child. Despite the doctors' efforts, the girl passed away.

Her body has been transported to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy.

The father had burns on his hands and has been sent home for further treatment after receiving the first aid.

"The father was admitted to the Institute for Burns, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He was diagnosed with second-degree burns on his hands," our source explains.

Six firefighters with three fire trucks took part in putting out the fire.

The investigation is ongoing and the prosecution has been informed about the case.
