Deputy Director of the University Clinical Center (UKC) Nis Dr. Radmilo Jankovic says that the situation is complex and that we are facing a tide of infections, because there is a coronavirus strain that is extremely virulent.

"It only takes a few seconds for this strain to pass from one person to another. It infects a large number of people, including those previously infected and vaccinated. My projection from the beginning of the month was 20,000 to 30,000 cases," Jankovic told Pink.rs.

He reiterated why he thinks the numbers are much scarier than we officially know, but also singled out one thing that is encouraging.

When it comes to the Omicron strain, Dr. Jankovic called it a "tide."

"My prognosis was that we would have 20,000-30,000 confirmed cases and that is the realistic situation, these are newly registered but not also (all) the newly infected. Primarily because the virus spreads among the younger population who are not disciplined and have fewer symptoms, they also avoid getting tested because of isolation. Fortunately, that terrible number is not reflected as in the previous two years," said Jankovic.

Speaking about hospitalization of Covid patients, he stressed that the Wuhan strain's clinical picture was that 20 to 25 percent of infected people had to go to the hospital, meaning that one in five had to be hospitalized.

"Later, with other strains such as Delta, the percentage was a little below ten, eight to ten percent. Now, out of so many infected, it is below one percent. One in one hundred has to go to the hospital," he said.
