Archaeological excavations carried out in the territory of the village of Kremna near Uzice have unearthed a unique site, which was determined to have been a Roman camp built in the 1st century. As such, this location is not only unique in Serbia, but also in the entire region, and can only be compared with the remains of Roman camps found in Spain and Britain.

"The camp is located at 800 meters above sea level, which is unique in and of itself. It has been preserved in its original state and is the best indicator of the level of the development of Roman architecture. After further research, the chronology will be confirmed and this truly unique site can be placed under permanent protection," the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments announced.

During the excavation of some of the trenches, arrows, coins and the remains of a horseshoe from this era were also found. There is the possibility that the camp will be reconstructed later based on the outline, and that would provide e huge tourism boost to the city of Uzice.

The entire Zlatibor District is fertile ground for archaeological research, and many exhibits from the same era are now in the National Museum in Uzice.

"The Romans arrived in what is today Western Serbia as conquerors, and chose well-positioned sites for their residence, from which they could observe the arrival of an enemy's army. The conquering army left behind sacrificial monuments dedicated to deities. The influence of the Romans in the territory of the city of Uzice was most dominant in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Wherever they planned to build a settlement, they first built a road and stationed their forces. Some archaeological sites have been discovered in the narrow and wider city center," Marina Kotarac, an archaeologist from the National Museum in Uzice, told RINA.
