Plastic floats on a river, guess which? Thousands of cubic meters of waste, cleaning continues after holidays

The most critical point is Lake Potpec (Serbian: Potpecko Jezero)

It's a new year, and an old and seemingly never-ending story. Tens of thousands of cubic meters of garbage have once again flooded the Lim River, and the most critical point is certainly Lake Potpec. The sprockets that have been installed provide some protection, while members of the Ecological Association "Jastreb" will continue their cleaning campaign immediately after the holidays.

"The garbage that reached the dam has been cleaned. We will continue the removal of waste at the sprocket itself immediately after the holidays. Everything is being taken to the Duboko Regional Landfill, after which wood (from the collected waste) is given back to us, which we pass on to a boiler room and thus achieve multiple savings. As soon as the weather gets better, the heavy machines waiting on the banks of the Lim will be ready to continue the removal and to restore the most beautiful river in the former Yugoslavia to its best condition," Sinisa Lakovic told RINA.

The sprockets managed to keep about 10,000 cubic meters of garbage that is currently in the river, which got there thanks to torrential floods in Montenegro, and prevent it from reaching the Potpec hydro-power plant, and from continuing on, toward Bosnia and Herzegovina.

During a flood wave, about 15,000 cubic meters of garbage, made up of plastic and packaging, various metals, household appliances and devices, as well as a significant amount of wood, reached the Lim.

"During the last major inflow, we recorded more than 600 meters per second. Previously, the waste would get held at the hydroelectric dam itself. Now, about three kilometers above the dam, we have a sprocket that retained that garbage. I think this is an inter-state problem because most of the waste comes from Montenegro," Predrag Saponjic, director of the Lim Hydro-Power Plants, said earlier.
