Representatives of the opposition parties in the Serbian Assembly met on Tuesday with President of the European Council Antonio Costa, who was visiting Belgrade.

Costa stressed that the enlargement of the EU is still a clear political priority and reminded that Serbia is expected to prepare media laws, as well as reform electoral legislation, which should receive a comment from the European Commission next week.

Costa emphasized the importance of European values as the foundation of every democratic society and the foundation from which a way out of the current crisis should be sought, the Assembly of Serbia announced.

The meeting was attended by opposition deputies Miroslav Aleksic, Radomir Lazovic, Srdjan Milivojevic, Zdravko Ponos, Slobodan Lukic, Pavle Grbovic, Slavica Radovanovic, Ksenija Markovic, Biljana Djordjevic and Aleksandar Jovanovic.

They made claims that they were "excluded" from the process of preparing media laws and electoral legislation reform and that "the internal political situation in Serbia is outside the focus of the EU."

Costa did not provide a concrete answer to questions from the opposition deputies, which contained criticism of President Aleksandar Vucic's visit to Moscow on Victory Day.

The president of the European Council previously met with Serbian President Vucic, Prime Minister Djuro Macut, and President of the Assembly Ana Brnabic, and during those conversations he emphasized that the EU remains strongly committed to Serbia's accession as a stable and prosperous country, and added that it is now important to quickly translate this into concrete actions and speed up reforms.
