The director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija Petar Petkovic met today in Belgrade with Russian Ambassador Aleksandr Botsan-Kharchenko.

During the conversation, Petkovic expressed Belgrade's strong concern over the arrest in Kosovo and Metohija of his assistant, Igor Popovic, as well as political and unlawful verdicts issued by a court in Pristina, convicting Serbs without any evidence, as "a political instrument in the hands of Albin Kurti."

Petkovic stressed that with arbitrary arrests and verdicts not based on the rule of law but on political retaliation, and ethnicity, Pristina is in effect continuing the process of intimidation and persecution of Serbs and the institutional ethnic cleansing in Kosovo and Metohija, the Office for Kosovo and Metohija said in a statement.

"Pristina continues with escalating moves, raising tensions and causing crises on the ground with its actions, including the arrest of my assistant Igor Popovic, directly stifling the (Brussels) dialogue and making it pointless," Petkovic said.

He added that Belgrade and the Serb people in Kosovo and Metohija expect the international community to fulfill its part of the entrusted mandate and protect Serbs, above all guarantee peace and security to them, so that they are not "victims of political processes under Kurti's regime" and will instead see the Community of Serb Municipalities (ZSO) formed - which they have been waiting for, for over 12 years.
