Minister Berisa condemns incidents in Novi Pazar

Serbian Minister for Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue Demo Berisa has condemned the incidents and attacks on members of the police in front of the State University in Novi Pazar, and called on everyone to establish dialogue.

"Police officers perform their duty conscientiously and are not political opponents, as some clearly think and then take justice into their own hands. Such disgraceful behavior is not in line with the democratic values that Serbia nurtures, and regardless of whether it's about citizens or officials, such acts must be sanctioned in accordance with the law," Berisa stated, according to his ministry.

He added that, unfortunately, these and similar attacks have become a frequent occurrence in society and lead to disruption of the coexistence between minority communities and the majority.

"I call for dialogue, refraining from provocations and establishment of order and stability. Full support for President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic, and I call on all political actors in Novi Pazar to come out and publicly condemn these acts and call on the people to disperse peacefully in order to avoid any further incidents," Berisa stated and urged all those who left for Novi Pazar from elsewhere in Serbia, to turn back so that their behavior would not contribute to causing bloodshed.

The Rector's College of the State University in Novi Pazar has decided that from Tuesday until the beginning of the new academic year 2025/26. teaching and student activities will not be held in the school's building.

A group of students who participate in blockades of the State University in Novi Pazar entered the university building yesterday after negotiations with representatives of the administration.

Before that, there was another incident when protesters attacked the police who were guarding the entrance to the building and threw bottles and stones at them.

The police called on the crowd to calm down and not resort to violence, while they wanted on the police to withdraw and let the student "blockaders" return to the faculty building, the media reported earlier.
