In September 2022, the construction of the section of the future Sarajevo- Belgrade highway started in Semberija. Three years later, the contractors point out that almost half of the work has been done, while most is expected to finish next year, when this section should be opened, writes BHRT.

Works on the Bijeljina-Raca section, 20 kilometers long, are intensively carried out, and according to data from Autoputevi RS the contract is 40 percent done.

Mladen Petrovic, deputy coordinator for the section Bijeljina-Raca in that public company, is quoted as saying:

"We expect that the works will be completed by the end of next year. The route is designed to include nine structures - five overpasses and four bridges, as well as a large interchange and a toll booth on the border with Serbia, where there will be an exit to the border crossing."

The investment amounts to 258.6 million (Bosnia Herzegovina) marks before VAT. The most demanding part of the project was a bridge on the Sava River, which was built by Serbia.

Residents of Bijeljina expect that the new highway will bring new jobs and investments, while the business community in this part of the country sees a development opportunity in a better connection with Serbia.

Branimir Andric, president of the Chamber of Commerce of the Bijeljina region, points out:

"There will certainly be an opportunity to start new production facilities and attract foreign investments to the Bijeljina region, which will contribute to development of the economy and the population."

Six years ago, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia signed an agreement on cooperation in order to build the Belgrade-Sarajevo-Belgrade highway.

And while the section through the Semberija region is progressing, the rest of the highway still exists only on paper, due to unresolved property issues, inconsistent routes and other administrative obstacles.
