A horrific shooting incident happened today in broad daylight in a cafe in in Novopazarska Street in Vracar, a central Belgrade municipality.

Telegraf.rs has learned that the establishment's owner Vuk Bajrusevic was the target.

According to information available to us, the 50-year-old was shot in both legs and is currently undergoing medical treatment.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) has activated its ongoing Operation Vihor ("Whirlwind").

Shooter walked into cafe

The attacker reportedly walked into the cafe and shot Bajrusevic in the legs, and then left the scene on foot. A large number of police officers, as well as an ambulance crew, were immediately dispatched to the scene.

The victim was transported to the Emergency Center.

Because of the nature of the incident and to help in the search for the perpetrator, the police immediately launched Operation Vihor, that involves the blocking of key roads and intensified checks in the wider area of the Serbian capital.

Who is Vuk Bajrusevic?

In 2017, Bajrusevic was sentenced to one year in prison for attempting to extort 850,000 euros.

This decision was confirmed by the Higher Court in Belgrade, which determined that from May 2009 until May 2010, Bajrusevic tried to force his victim, A.A., to pay the money he claimed was owed to him, and used death threats and threats of extreme violence to achieve this goal.

The ruling states that Bajrusevic demanded the payment of 850,000 euros, and when the victim said that he did not owe him money, Bajrusevic started making serious threats, which caused the victim to fear for his own life and the safety of his family.

Bajrusevic himself was the victim of kidnapping on November 7, 2000, carried out by members of the Zemun Clan crime gang, who demanded a ransom of 1.5 million German marks from his sister, Bojana Bajrusevic.

On February 10, 2017, Bojana Bajrusevic was convicted to five years in prison in the first instance ruling issued by the Special Court. She stood accused of cigarette smuggling that was taking place from 1996 until 2001.

It is also of interest that the the same verdict acquitted Mihalj Kerets, a former top Serbian official, who was also accused of cigarette smuggling in several separate cases.

The court at the time ordered the seizure of a sum in excess of 7 million euros from Bojana Bajrusevic.
