What changed regarding NIS after statement made by Lavrov: These are scenarios for January 15!
US sanctions are pushing NIS (Petroleum Industry of Serbia) into ever-increasing uncertainty. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that negotiations about NIS are ongoing and that nationalization of that company (by Serbia) is only possible with Russia's consent.
President Aleksandar Vucic is convinced that the situation will be resolved by January 15 and that the Russians will understand that Serbia "cannot live without NIS (working)". He also said that he would like to hear Russia's ideas on how to resolve the NIS issue and avoid US penalties.
It is the 64th day since the US started implementing sanctions against Petroleum Industry of Serbia, that is majority-owned by Russia (Gazprom), reports RTS.
During a meeting with ambassadors in Moscow, Lavrov said that the intergovernmental agreement between Serbia and Russia stipulates that nationalization of NIS cannot be carried out unless both sides agree.
"Under what conditions can an agreement be reached regarding nationalization, or on some other form of solution to this problem? Perhaps the solution consists in finding a way for NIS to continue working, regardless of the possibilities that the US has to punish that company. I don't know, the (Russian) minister of energy and relevant economic operators, as well as companies in your (Serbia's) neighboring countries that worked with NIS, deal with that," Lavrov said on Thursday.
Responding to a journalist who asked him to comment on Lavrov's statement, Vucic said that he would like to hear Russia's ideas on how to resolve the NIS issue while avoiding US penalties and reiterated that Serbia has no intention of stealing anyone's property.
The president added that he hopes the negotiations between the Russians and an Arab company are serious and that Serbia will manage to preserve good relations with both the Russians and the Americans. And considering that a new contract with Gazprom has not yet been signed, Vucic also said that the state will soon start buying natural gas from other sources.
