Serbia's state healthcare insurance fund, RFZO, has financed a successful simultaneous liver and kidney transplant for a seven-year-old girl from Serbia, that was performed in a clinic in Italy.

All costs of treatment, and transportation by special flight carried out by the Air Service of the Government of Serbia, were covered by the RFZO, it was announced today.

This extremely complex surgery was performed in mid-December, and the child was discharged yesterday for home recovery, with outpatient monitoring.

The matching donor of both organs was the patient's father, who is also successfully recovering.

This is a significant medical undertaking, since the child is the first person from Serbia, and the first in Italy, to have simultaneously undergone a combined liver and kidney transplant from a living donor, the RFZO said in a statement.
