Archaeologists make incredible discovery near city of Nis in Serbia
The Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments in the city of Nis is carrying out protective archaeological excavations on the route of the Railway Bypass, at the Novosel archaeological site in the village of Malca.
According to the Institute, the Novosel archaeological site is a settlement from the Neolithic period. It most likely originated and developed after the use of rondels (circular enclosures) at the archaeological site Ornicje and is directly related to the development of life at the eponymous archaeological sites of Bubanj and Velika Humska Cuka.
"According to preliminary data, it can be said that this is a settlement that belongs to the Cernavoda III cultural group," said the Institute.
More information will be collected after the protective archaeological excavations have been completed, which are being carried out at the Novosel site covering an area of about 15,000 square meters in a length of about 500 meters along the route of the Railway Bypass.
"The archaeological site extends both north and south of the route itself, but archaeological excavations are carried out along the route of the Railway Bypass. The Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments in Nis conducted complete protective archaeological excavations at the archaeological site of Ornicje K.O. Malca at an unusual archaeological site that had a system of works and palisades in the form of concentric circles (rondel type archeological site)," stated the Institute.
Protective archaeological excavations are carried out in cooperation with the Belgrade Archaeological Institute and the National Museum in Nis.
"It is necessary to carry out complete archaeological excavations in the area of archaeological sites on the Railway Bypass route, in order to allow for railway construction works," the Institute pointed out.
Excavations are being carried out according to the priorities of the construction project and under extremely difficult conditions due to heavy precipitation.
These excavations are among the largest that the Institute has organized since its establishment. More than 25 archaeologists are participating, and the area covered exceeds 17,000 square meters.
