Morning after construction site collapse in Belgrade: Car and part of parking lot disappear into huge hole

The police last night ordered a building in Vojvode Vlahovica Street in Belgrade to be evacuated, after a car and part of a parking lot fell into a large hole when a retaining wall collapsed at a construction site. This morning, we learned that a minibus operating on line 26L has been canceled, while the area is surrounded by workers, and repair work is being carried out.

A Telegraf.rs journalist is reporting from the scene that the police are still on the ground, and the street is closed.

The wall at the construction site collapsed around 17:00 hours yesterday, and then a part of the parking lot of a nearby building and a car fell into the hole, which was several dozen meters deep. Fortunately, nobody was injured.

Photos and videos from the scene show a white car that fell into the whole along with a large part of the parking lot. There is also an excavator standing at the edge of the abyss. The residents from the building in front of which the sinkhole appeared do not hide their concern.

"We have been saying for two months that it will collapse. The soil was breaking off non-stop," said one resident.

"Every day, when I passed by here and looked at this hole, the thought crossed my mind of how this worst-case scenario would happen. It was horrible to watch this every day. The residents tried everything, we organized blockades and protests, even the minibus, which was our only connection with the neighborhood, was canceled for several days, but nothing worked," one person told Telegraf.rs.

Police quickly closed the street to traffic and diverted buses.

However, it should be noted that although it was originally announced that line 26L would use a changed route through the settlement, readers are informing us that this did not happen this morning.
